Straight Answer

Do Resistance Bands Snap?

The Short Answer

Yes. Any resistance band can snap, Bodylastics bands included. Overstretching is the number one reason resistance bands snap, followed by age, small nicks and poor storage. Every Bodylastics band has a patented inner safety cord that stops it overstretching, and if a Bodylastics band ever does snap, it shortens on the cord instead of flying back at you.

Why Resistance Bands Snap

A resistance band snaps when the latex fails under load. Four things cause almost every failure, and the first one causes the most.

  • Overstretching

Stretching a band past the length its latex is built for. This is the number one reason resistance bands snap.

  • Age

Natural latex ages. With regular use, a band set wants replacing after roughly two to three years.

  • Nicks And Rubbing

A small cut from a sharp edge, a rough anchor point or a ring turns into a tear under load.

  • Heat And Sunlight

Heat, sunlight and changes in humidity age natural latex faster, so storage matters.

How The Inner Safety Cord Works

A patented cord runs inside every Bodylastics band. It stops you stretching the latex too far, which removes the number one cause of snaps. If a band ever does snap, the cord holds the two ends together, so the band shortens on the cord instead of flying back at you.

“We've tested 32 sets of bands and found that the Bodylastics Stackable Tube Resistance Bands are the best traditional tube-and-handle bands. They are reinforced with rope to help prevent the type of overstretching that can lead to potentially dangerous breakage.”

New York Times Wirecutter

“In my opinion, the best thing about these bands is the patented anti-snap technology.”

Four Habits That Prevent Most Snaps

Most resistance band breaks are preventable. These four habits take a minute and add years to a set.

  1. Don't Overstretch

Choose a heavier band, or stack two, instead of pulling a light band to its limit.

  2. Check Before You Train

Run each band through your hand. Retire any band with a crack, split or nick.

  3. Store Bands Indoors

Keep bands in their bag, away from heat, sunlight and changes in humidity. Not in a hot car.

  4. Replace As They Age

Expect a set to want replacing after two to three years of regular use.

More Questions

Do Bodylastics resistance bands snap?

Yes, they can. All resistance bands can snap, Bodylastics bands included. Every Bodylastics band has a patented inner safety cord that stops it overstretching, the number one reason bands snap, and if a Bodylastics band does snap, it shortens on the cord instead of flying back at you.

Can a snapped resistance band hit you?

Yes. A band without a safety cord can whip back toward you when it snaps under load. A Bodylastics band has a patented inner safety cord that holds the two ends together, so a snapped Bodylastics band shortens on the cord instead of flying back.

How do I know when to replace a resistance band?

Replace a resistance band as soon as it shows a crack, split or nick, and check every band before you train. With regular use, a natural latex band set lasts roughly two to three years before it wants replacing.

Does the Bodylastics guarantee cover a snapped band?

Yes. If a Bodylastics band snaps, breaks or fails in the first 90 days, Bodylastics replaces it free: email help@bodylastics.com with your order number and a photo of the band. After 90 days, replacement bands are sold at cost for as long as you own the set.
